Soft sautéed kale
Incredibly Soft and Flavorful Sautéed Kale — Ready in Under Twenty Minutes with Few Ingredients and One Pan
Sautéed kale is a simple and much-loved classic in Brazilian cuisine. It comes from the tradition of using fresh greens as a side dish for dishes like feijoada, or with other bean recipes like tropeiro beans, but it also shines on its own.
The flavor is light, with the bold touch of garlic and the aroma of olive oil. It’s special because it turns tender without losing its color, comes together quickly, and requires very few ingredients and just one pan — ideal for those who follow tips on how to make delicious food with ingredients you already have.
In this version, the star is the thinly sliced kale leaf, which becomes soft and juicy. Garlic adds aroma and a warm, homey flavor. Olive oil coats every leaf and adds richness. A little salt and black pepper balance and enhance everything.
A splash of water helps create steam and makes the kale even more tender, and a few drops of lemon at the end add a freshness that cuts through the fat and brightens the dish. Together, these elements create a simple, delicious sautéed kale with perfect texture.
Ingredients
- 1 bunch kale (about 300 g / 10 oz), leaves washed and very thinly sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced or crushed
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt to taste (approx. 1/2 teaspoon)
- Ground black pepper to taste (a pinch)
- 1 tablespoon water
- Juice of 1/2 lemon (or a few drops) to finish
Instructions
- Wash the kale thoroughly and remove the thick stems. Slice the leaves very thinly.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil.
- Add the garlic and sauté for 20–30 seconds, just until fragrant. Do not let it burn.
- Add the sliced kale to the skillet and toss with the garlic.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Add 1 tablespoon of water and cover the pan for 1–2 minutes to create steam and soften the kale. Stir and check the texture.
- Turn off the heat, squeeze the lemon over the top, and stir. Serve hot.
