Creamy and Budget-Friendly No-Bake Tray Dessert

This tray dessert is a homemade classic that recalls pavê and other simple childhood treats. It comes from easy recipes that circulate among Brazilian families and requires no oven. The flavor is sweet, creamy, and chocolatey — wonderfully comforting. What makes it special is the combination of soft layered texture with a topping that adds contrast, along with being budget-friendly and quick to assemble for parties or everyday occasions — a great alternative among easy and quick no-bake desserts.

In this version, the sweetness comes from condensed milk that blends with heavy cream to form a velvety filling — the same base ingredient found in many homemade sweets, like the three-ingredient brigadeiro. Cocoa or drinking chocolate powder brings the chocolate flavor and makes everything more intense, with a texture close to an easy velvety chocolate mousse, while a little milk adjusts the creaminess so it’s easy to spread. Marie biscuits absorb this cream and create soft layers that melt in your mouth, and butter adds firmness and smoothness to the denser layers. On top, grated or sprinkle chocolate adds a crunchy touch and a beautiful finish, completing the dessert without any fuss.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (395 g / 14 oz) condensed milk
  • 1 small carton (200 g / 7 oz) heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder (or 6 tablespoons drinking chocolate powder)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) milk
  • 200–300 g Marie biscuits (approx. 1 package)
  • 2 tablespoons (30 g) butter
  • Grated chocolate or chocolate sprinkles to top (to taste)
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the condensed milk, heavy cream, cocoa (or drinking chocolate), and milk. Add vanilla if using.
  2. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, for 3–5 minutes until smooth and creamy. Turn off the heat and set aside. Separate about 1/3 of this cream into a bowl (for the firmer layer, if desired).
  3. If making the firmer layer: mix the butter (at room temperature or melted) into the reserved 1/3 of the cream until uniform.
  4. Take a medium serving dish (or baking dish). Quickly dip the biscuits in milk (1–2 seconds each, just to moisten) and form a layer on the bottom of the dish.
  5. Spread half of the main cream over the biscuits. Make another layer of dipped biscuits. If you prepared the butter mixture, place it now over this second biscuit layer. If not, use the remaining regular cream.
  6. Finish with the rest of the cream on top and sprinkle with grated chocolate or chocolate sprinkles.
  7. Refrigerate for at least 2–4 hours (or overnight) before serving — this chilling time is common in many no-bake frozen desserts, which become firmer and more flavorful when well refrigerated.

Ingredient Highlights

Cocoa contains antioxidants and delivers intense flavor. Milk and cream provide calcium and fat that make the cream rich. The biscuits add texture and energy (carbohydrates). Remember this is a sweet dessert and should be enjoyed in moderation.

Yield: About 8–10 portions. Great for parties, family lunches, gatherings with friends, or as a quick everyday dessert — pair with other quick ideas like a chocolate mug cake for practical variations, or include it among your Christmas recipe options when you need no-bake alternatives. It also works wonderfully as a choice for afternoon tea with the family.
